Downtown Cairo’s Revival Gains International Recognition

Downtown Cairo’s architectural heritage is gaining renewed international attention, demonstrating how historic buildings can be preserved while creating new opportunities for businesses, culture and tourism.

Egyptian real estate developer Al Ismaelia for Real Estate Investment has become the first company in the Middle East and North Africa to receive recognition through the World Economic Forum’s Beyond Tourism Impact Stars programme in the Infrastructure and Real Estate category.

The recognition highlights the company’s Reviving Downtown Cairo initiative, which focuses on restoring historic properties and adapting them for contemporary uses.

Since 2008, Al Ismaelia has acquired and restored a portfolio of 25 properties, introducing spaces for hospitality, restaurants, offices, independent Egyptian brands and cultural activities.

Among its projects are Cinema Radio, La Viennoise Building and Tamara Haus, each demonstrating how historic architecture can be brought back into everyday city life.

The initiative reflects a growing interest in urban regeneration that balances heritage conservation with economic activity and community engagement.

For Cairo, such developments offer an opportunity to strengthen the city’s identity while creating more vibrant neighbourhoods where people can work, socialise and experience culture.
